We offer Wild Things on a sliding scale from £375-£700 which can be paid in 1 or 3 instalments - see below for how this works & optional in person add ons. We also offer a limited number of subsidised places at £250.

Please take time to read through all the info below including the FAQs & book your place here:

Welcome to our course, we can't wait to start learning with you...

During this second 8 month journey together we will be deepening our exploration of the wonderful wild herbs growing all around us. We will continue our reflective practice on the importance of sustainable harvesting practices & low impact foraging, whilst delving deeper into the world of botany, ecology & sensory herbalism.

Year 2 encourages you to build on your existing knowledge from the first year of the course & to gain confidence to apply what you have learned. Like year one, our digital pre-recorded classroom sessions will be made up of a mixture of theoretical & practical activities & we will be visiting seven new habitats on our virtual herb walks. These include the seashore, taking our eyes off the ground and looking up at the mighty trees, rootling around in the mycelial networks of fungi & an in depth root harvesting session in one of our gardens. The combination of theory and practice will grow confidence in your medicine making & your personal relationship with our herbal allies.

We will celebrate some of the many herbal traditions that make use of wild weeds around us. We aim to foster a culture of self & community empowerment & sufficiency, which respects diversity as well as common understanding.

As with the first year, this follow up course is about re-connection & about building sustainable, healthful practices through a deepening relationship with our local ecosystems.

The plants that are covered on this course are those that are common and abundant in the Northern British Isles. While the theoretical elements and practical remedy making sessions will be applicable wherever you are, we suggest this course will fit best for people living in the British Isles or in a similar climate.

Course Format

This online course consists of 15 roughly fortnightly sessions spanning from March to October to cover a range of seasons. In total there are 8 'indoor' sessions and 7 'outdoor' sessions which make up the 15 digital sessions.

Each session comes with a guided sensory tea tasting - we will post 16 'mystery herbs' out to you at the start of the course to explore with us over the 8 months. The discussion space in the course is where students can ask questions, share great recipes and recourses and where we update the group with practical things too. Why Do We Use A Sliding Scale?

Our core aim in Grass Roots Remedies Co-operative is to try and make herbal knowledge, skills & consultations accessible to everyone. As well as running herb walks, courses & workshops we also provide a community clinic in Wester Hailes, South West Edinburgh which runs by donation to local people (the only one of its kind in Scotland), and a sliding scale community clinic in Granton, North Edinburgh both of which have free workshops running alongside them.

We use a sliding scale in our workshops and courses: a sliding scale is a mechanism where people pay different fees according to their income & access to resources, so that services can be made accessible to as many people as possible, and folk are less financially excluded. A sliding scale means that everyone pays a similar proportion of their income for the same service.

This increases access for people who are systemically excluded from participating in community activities such as people of colour, people with disabilities or health conditions, immigrants, women-led groups, LGBTQ* & working class communities.

By paying a higher rate on the scale if you can afford it, you are enabling us to carry out our core work of providing free and low cost education & herbal consultations in areas of deprivation. We really appreciate your continuing support.

How Much Should I Pay?

Below are some guidelines to inform which course fee is most appropriate for your situation. We acknowledge that there are many factors which determine how much expendable income and financial security folks have & we appreciate that everyone’s situation is different, so please refer to the below as guideline only. We won’t ask for any proof of your personal circumstances & trust each of you to judge which price feels right for you.

For example, if some of the statements below describe your situation you may choose to buy a low cost place for £375 or a subsidised place for £250:

- I have access to benefits or am employed but have very limited expendable income
- I have limited savings and/or limited access to any financial support from others
- I am a carer &/or have dependants
- I have no recourse to public funds
- I have chronic health issues which impact my financial security

For example, if some of the statements below describe your situation you may choose to buy a medium cost place for £600 or a solidarity place for £700:

- I am able to comfortably meet my basic needs, have savings & an expendable income
- any debt that I have doesn’t impact my daily life
- I comfortably rent a property or own my own
- I own a car & can comfortably afford fuel
- I am able to afford to go on holidays

Courses purchased at the solidarity price enable us to carry out our community work & offer subsidised places on the course to folks who would not be able to access it otherwise. We are trusting everyone to respect this model & thank you all for playing your part in increasing the accessibility of the course.

Blended Option: Join us for in-person Seasonal Sessions

The blended option gives you full access to the Online Course, plus attendance at 6 in-person sessions allowing you to study the online sessions at your own pace whilst also having opportunities to meet up in person. Responding to feedback from previous students wanting more opportunities to meet others, from 2024 we have been complimenting our 4 facilitated Seaweeds, Heathland herbs & trees, Fungi & Roots sessions with 2 extra opportunities for students to meet up in our garden at the Lauriston Agroecology Farm in North West Edinburgh. The student meet ups will be half day informal sessions to get involved in seasonal garden tasks & explore a herb in depth with a group tea tasting.

A real highlight of the Wild Things Year Two course is having guest tutors join us for a few of our videos & in person sessions. In 2025 we are thrilled to have highly regarded forager, teacher & research herbalist Monica Wild teaching us all about Scottish Seaweeds uses & lore in April  & then taking us to explore the fungal layers of the forest floor in September. See below for the dates, times & locations of our in-person seasonal sessions & student meet ups.

Frequently asked questions

You’ve got questions. We’ve got answers.

When do enrolments open & close?

We open enrolments for the course usually around December of the year before the course starts in March.

We close enrolments at the end of April each year so folks coming across the course later in the spring won't miss out. We close bookings at the end of April as we feel if folks join later than this they will get more out of the course by signing up for the following year.

If bookings are closed when you read this and you'd like to be notified of when enrolment is available for the next year, email us at hello@grassrootsremedies.co.uk.

Do I have to study each online lesson on the dates they are published?

No. These dates are just when content is released through this seasonal course. Once a lesson is released you can study it anytime afterwards at your leisure.

How many hours a week do I need to study?

You can study the Wild Things online course at your own pace - taking breaks when you need to & returning at your leisure. Sessions are released roughly fortnightly with a midsummer break in the middle. Sessions will differ in length a little but in general if all resources are worked through in a lesson, digital classroom sessions require roughly 3-5 hours & digital herb walks require roughly 2 hours.

How long do I have access to the course?

You will continue to have access to the course after the course ends. Once the course finishes we will no longer be answering your queries, but you will have all the course material at your fingertips for years to come, so you can revisit our lessons again and again. We have done this as we feel that you will get the most out of the course material this way & trust that you will respect this & not share our Wild Things resources with others (even your bestest of friends). The educational arm of our co-op allows our community herbal medicine clinics to exist & we are trusting everyone to respect this model to sustain them & provide this health service to folks in the future. Thank you for playing your part in sustainable community herbalism!

I want to pay in instalments. Is there a charge for this?

Yes. We give the option of paying in one go when booking or to select payment in 3 monthly instalments. We increase the price to account for the bank charges & admin fees for paying in 3 instalments.

For example if you book onto the course on December 1st choosing to pay £700 you can either pay:

1 instalment: £700 on Dec 1st

3 instalments: £240 on Dec 1st, £240 on January 1st, £240 on February 1st totalling £720.

I want to purchase a subsidised place at £250 but they are all allocated. Will any more become available?

We have 5 subsidised places at £250. When these are allocated the option to purchase the course at this price is no longer available. We will then review course sales fortnightly & release more subsidised places if we have had people purchase places at the solidarity price.

If you are trying to purchase a subsidised place and they are not available please email jillian@grassrootsremedies.co.uk to put you on a waiting list. If a place becomes available you will be notified by email. If a place does not become available you will be emailed when course bookings open for the following year.

Is there funding for this course?

We aim to keep Wild Things as affordable as possible through the use of a sliding scale, however, we know cost will still be a barrier for some folk. Wild Things may be eligible for funding from other sources, particularly vocational training funding.

Foundation Scotland www.foundationscotland.org.uk/apply-for-funding/funding-available have offered some funding in specific instances in the past - please contact them to find out more. You may also want to find out if your local authority offers vocational funding, or if you are available through any state benefits that you receive or from your employer.

Please note that Grass Roots Remedies Co-op is not involved in the administration or allocation of any of these funds, so please enquire directly to the funder.

What is your refund policy?

If you have booked onto the course but have changed your mind we can fully refund minus a 5% transaction fee up until 28th February 2025. No refunds can be given after this date.

I'm pregnant, breast/chestfeeding or have a medical condition. Is this course safe for me?

One key component of the course is our guided sensory herbal tea tastings - we will post out 16 mystery herbs at the start of the course and provide you with guidance on meeting them with all of your senses. For each herb we will provide any contraindications in advance so you can decide for yourself if it is suitable for you to taste them or not. If you have any questions about this, you'll be able to check in with us, & there's no pressure to taste any of them. You can always sit with the herb & just smell it instead if that's what feels right. We provide full monographs on each herb to be downloaded after your tasting.

I live outside of the British Isles, is this course suitable for me?

The plants that are covered on this course are those that are common and abundant in the Northern British Isles. While the theoretical elements and practical remedy making sessions will be applicable wherever you are, we suggest this course will fit best for people living in the British Isles or in a similar climate.
Outside the British Isles, depending on where you live we may not be able to post the 16 Mystery Herbs to you. You are welcome to join this course and explore these in your own way, and we will send the mystery teas to you if we can.

I have some previous herbal knowledge, can I skip Wild Things Year One and go straight into Year Two?

No. The Wild Things year 1 course brings together a diverse range of subjects (you can find the booking & information page here). The course also focuses on wild plants only (rather than commonly grown herbal medicines such as chamomile, calendula, lemon balm etc), many of which may be new to you. The herbs covered are in Year 1 are:

nettle, dandelion, garlic mustard, sticky willie, few flowered leek, wild garlic, chickweed, coltsfoot, birch, pine, white dead nettle, hawthorn, elder, comfrey, meadowsweet, horsetail, plantain, daisy, st john's wort, lime flower, sweet cicely, raspberry leaf, rose, yarrow, self heal, mugwort, sea buckthorn, burdock, blackberry, valerian, marsh mallow, wild cherry bark, cramp bark, willow, oak, birch polypore fungus, turkey tail fungus, old man's beard lichen.

Do I get a qualification for completing this course?

Wild Things is a self-led course for your own learning, enjoyment & skills. There is no formal qualification awarded as a result of completing the course. If you would like a Certificate of Completion for your CPD or for another reason at the end, we are happy to provide these on request.

I want to purchase the in-person seasonal sessions, how do I do that?

The option to purchase the in person seasonal sessions for an extra £150 will pop up once you have purchased the course in the check out process. Please note, whatever price you choose to pay on the sliding scale for our Wild Things Year 2 online course, you will be paying an extra £150 for the in-person sessions.

I want to purchase the optional in person seasonal sessions. Are they accessible on public transport?

For Wild Things 2 we visit places a little harder to get to on public transport & stay there for the day. If you don't have a car & would like to book on to the course get in touch with us to arrange lift sharing.

I want to purchase the optional in person seasonal sessions but know I can't make all of the dates. Can I buy individual walks instead?

No. You can only buy the seasonal sessions as a set. Check out our social media pages & sign up for our newsletter to find out about other in-person workshops we are running.

I have booked on to the in-person seasonal sessions - can I bring my dog?

Although many of us in the co-op love dogs & hang out with them in our homes too, we ask you to leave your furry friends at home. There is always so much to talk about on herb walks that we often don't walk very far. This can lead to dogs getting frustrated at us silly humans. We also don't know how other people in the group feel about dogs.

Can I bring my baby/kids on the herb walks?

The Wild Things course material and its herb walks are pitched for adults, and can be boring for kids. Depending on how many folks sign up to the blended course option, the herb walks can also become too large with extra folk being brought along. We ask you to leave your loved ones at home wherever possible, and ask us in advance if you don't have another option.

I want to purchase the optional in person seasonal sessions. What happens if a session can't go ahead due to unforeseen circumstances?

Wherever possible we will look to reschedule herb walks if they are disrupted by unforeseen circumstances such as severe weather conditions. If you are unwell & miss a herb walk you can catch up with the digital version & we will see you in person at the next one.

I still have a question, how can I contact you?

We are happy to answer any questions you might have. Send us an email at hello@grassrootsremedies.co.uk.
