Below are some guidelines to inform which course fee is most appropriate for your situation. We acknowledge that there are many factors which determine how much expendable income and financial security folks have & we appreciate that everyone’s situation is different, so please refer to the below as guideline only. We won’t ask for any proof of your personal circumstances & trust each of you to judge which price feels right for you.
For example, if some of the statements below describe your situation you may choose to buy a low cost place for £375 or a subsidised place for £250:
- I have access to benefits or am employed but have very limited expendable income
- I have limited savings and/or limited access to any financial support from others
- I am a carer &/or have dependants
- I have no recourse to public funds
- I have chronic health issues which impact my financial security
For example, if some of the statements below describe your situation you may choose to buy a medium cost place for £600 or a solidarity place for £700:
- I am able to comfortably meet my basic needs, have savings & an expendable income
- any debt that I have doesn’t impact my daily life
- I comfortably rent a property or own my own
- I own a car & can comfortably afford fuel
- I am able to afford to go on holidays
Courses purchased at the solidarity price enable us to carry out our community work & offer subsidised places on the course to folks who would not be able to access it otherwise. We are trusting everyone to respect this model & thank you all for playing your part in increasing the accessibility of the course.
If you are available on 8 Saturdays from March to October & would like to study in person in Glasgow, find out more information & book onto our fully in person class here. This class is now full.

We aim to keep Wild Things as affordable as possible through the use of a sliding scale, however, we know cost will still be a barrier for some folk. Wild Things may be eligible for funding from other sources, particularly vocational training funding.
In 2023/24, people based in Scotland can apply for either the Women in Agriculture or Next Generation Practical Training Funds. Each fund offers £500 per person towards training and is for people who are working in or thinking of working in agriculture in Scotland. The funds are administered via Lantra Scotland, application links below - applications are considered within one month. Please note that Grass Roots Remedies is not involved in the administration of the funds and cannot provide any information on eligibility or the application progress - you should contact Lantra for any queries about your application.
To apply you will be asked to complete a detailed application form including explaining in depth (500 words) why Wild Things will help you with your current or future career in Agriculture.
Next Generation Practical Training Fund https://skillshub.scot/applications/intro?training-fund=6&course=7OuJXMmPaPnKL45qWap0
The fund is provided by the Scottish Government for residents of Scotland who either commenced their agricultural career in the last 5 years, or are studying farming, full-time or part-time, or who are keen to start. To help increase access to improved knowledge, knowhow and skills, this fund will provide support of up to £500 for new, and prospective new entrants to undertake training courses.
Although there is a particular focus on climate change adaptation and mitigation practices, and biodiversity/habitats improvement, the fund will also support other equally important areas such as health and safety; equipment training, business efficiency and resilience. In your application you should explain in detail how the training will support the development of your farming business or employment opportunities. We particularly welcome applications from remote rural and island communities.
Women in Agriculture Practical Training Fund https://skillshub.scot/applications/intro?training-fund=2&course=7OuJXMmPaPnKL45qWap0
The fund is open to any woman or girl, resident in Scotland who is either already working in or studying in this sector, full-time or part-time, or who is keen to start. In your application you should explain in detail how the training will support the development of your business or employment options. We welcome applications from remote rural and island communities.
Funding for the blended & attended course:
Once you have applied for funding and have had confirmation from Lantra that your application has been successful you can purchase our online course called ‘Wild Things: A Year of Wild Food & Medicine (Year 1) Online 2024’ for free. Just get in touch with us with your confirmation of funding and we will send you a free purchase code. If you would like to sign up for our blended course (the online course plus 7 in-person herb walks in Edinburgh) we ask for a £100 payment extra to your funding. If you would like to sign up for the fully attended course in Glasgow we ask for a £150 payment. If these contributions are a barrier to your attendance, get in touch with us to discuss this.
Unfortunately, we cannot ‘hold’ places on our attended course in Glasgow or our blended courses in Edinburgh while folk wait to hear back from the funders, however an online course place is guaranteed. If the blended course fills up and we get enough people to run an additional group we will do so if possible.
Foundation Scotland www.foundationscotland.org.uk/apply-for-funding/funding-available have also offered some funding in specific instances in the past - please contact them to find out more. You may also want to find out if your local authority offers vocational funding, or if you are available through any state benefits that you receive or from your employer. Please note that Grass Roots Remedies Co-op is not involved in the administration or allocation of any of these funds, so please enquire directly to the funder.

"Wild things has been life changing for me, so educational and enjoyable ! i feel i was quite lost and now alot more confident with herbs, foraging and learning i am so grateful to you all thankyou so much !"
"I have taken many herbal and foraging centred courses and found this one to be refreshing and in-depth whilst keeping you engaged. I loved how deeply each subject was covered and how friendly the videos and communication was."
"This course has changed drastically my relation with the forest and plants that surround me, giving me precious knowledge and tools for foraging and preserving them."
"This course covers everything from botany to plant constituents, you can take it at your own pace. Lovely videos easy to follow practice demonstrations and handouts to compliment these."
"A course to change your life. Well worth doing."
"A wonderful and truly inspiring start to a lifelong journey."
"A beautifully woven together course delivered with passion and enthusiasm. I've learned so much and couldn't recommend it highly enough. I look forward to signing up for year two."
"The course definitely achieved all it set out to offer and more. I felt it fully immersed me in the world of plant medicine and offered much food for thought. It re-awakened my interest in the power of our native plants and enabled me to connect more deeply with them. Thank you for empowering me to harvest sustainably the foods around me and look after my family's health within each season. Many thanks."
"In the year of 'lockdown' and disease this course has been liberating and life-giving. Knowledges from my grandmothers rekindled in herb walks and warm, gentle talks, in practical teaching and the unfolding of an ever deepening knowledge of plants around me. Everything presented clearly and with a bubble of soft laughter. I've long loved plants, and have been an allotment holder for over 20 years but this course - with its deep commitment to social and environmental ethics - has brought fabulous new dimensions alive. My work is often trying. Engaging with refugee justice and struggling against the hostile environment. Here were women and a community of herbalists making a healing environment. An antidote to ills of many kinds, an opening up of new worlds in the micro, local strips of forgotten land. My home is now full of lotions, potions, tinctures, vinegars, teas and elixirs, my hands soft with oils and balms and salves. Just months and months of joy. Thank you"
"I thoroughly enjoyed 'Wild Things' and would recommend the course to anyone interested in nature. I have become someone who excitedly calls out the names of plants I recognise when on a walk. As well as plant identification there are sessions on sustainable foraging, preparing and using herbs. The course is a lovely remedy to the stress of living during a pandemic."
"The online Wild Things course gave a thorough and fascinating introduction to folk medicine. I loved the emphasis on getting to know local plants throughout the seasons, learning how to recognise our own personal response to each plant, and always respecting the role each plant plays within the ecosystem. Each lesson gave an inspiring introduction to a topic and then suggestions of how to delve deeper to follow individual interests."
